Effect of Paclobutrazol on Growth and Tolerance to Chilling and Dought Stress in Cucumber Plant , Cucumis sativus L.

Abstract
Paclobutrazol (PP 333), a new growth regulator, was applied to elucidate the effects on growth, sex expression, fruit yield, chemical constituents in leaves and tolerance to environmental conditions of cucumber plant, Cucumis sativus L.
1. Application of paclobutrazol by soil drench significantly retarded the plant height, but not by stem or foliar treatment. The optimum concentration of chemical seemed to be 0.5ppm.
2. The cortex cells of PP 333 treated plant were shorter in length but wider in widths than those of untreated ones.
3. The content of gibberellin-like substances was markedly lower in stem of PP 333 treated plant compared with control plant. Chlorophyll per unit leaf area was significantly higher in the PP 333 applied plants, but ascorbic acids, soluble sugars and total free amino acids were not different among the treatments.
4. Paclobutrazol did not affect the total number of female flowers on the main stem, and fruits were not developed at the high concentration of over 5.0ppm.
5. Paclobutrazol increased the tolerance to chilling, drought and downy mildew in cucumber plants.
